Ukraine
Ukraine
has always been a popular program because parents are able
to choose their child in person. Because of the fee structure,
this is a great program for families wanting to adopt more
than one child. Last year over 1,100 children were adopted
from Ukraine.

Due to recent changes in the Ukraine adoption law,
the requirements and processes for adoption in Ukraine may
be changing. Please check back often for updates.
Children
Available for International Adoption
Infants
and children 18 months and up are available. The ethnic
background of most of the children is Ukrainian
or Russian-Caucasian; however, occasionally Gypsy,
Tatar and Asian children are waiting for families. The children
must stay on a national database for 12 months allowing
their own family members or other Ukrainian families
to come forth and adopt them. After this period of
time, these children will be available for international
adoption. Ukraine law allows the adoption of two unrelated
children. The children are generally in good health,
with the exception of some having minor special needs
and some of them will be considered delayed due to
time spent in the orphanage.
Adoptive
Parent Requirements
The program
is open to single women and married couples. There
is no limit on the number of children already living
in the home.with the adoptive family. Age requirements are flexible. The family
must meet United States Immigration requirements as
well as provide a complete dossier of paperwork to
Ukrainian officials.
Country
and Culture
Ukraine
is located in Eastern Europe between Poland and Russia.
It is approximately the size of Texas, and most of
its land is plains or plateaus. There are mountains
only in the far west and extreme south. The climate
in Ukraine is moderate, with mild winters and
plenty of rainfall in the fall and winter months.
Therefore, the land is quite fertile, and agriculture
is an important industry. Ukraine is one of the
world's main producers of sugar.
Ukraine
voted for its independent status on December 1st,
1991, and the U.S. recognized its independence on
December 25th of the same year. Over the past decade,
Ukraine has struggled with its new status. Some
residents look back at the Soviet rule as more stable
although poor, so their transition is not without
its difficulties.
The city
of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, has over 3 million
inhabitants. Kiev is an important industrial center
in the nation. It is known for its engineering and
electronics.
