Kazakhstan
The
children in Kazakhstan are, in general, very healthy
and very well cared for. Last year, more than 800
children were adopted from Kazakhstan.
There are
many wonderful Asian and Caucasian children,
from 6 months of age and up. The children must stay
on a national database for 5 months. After this period
of time, these children will be available for international
adoption. Sibling groups are available, most likely
they will be of the ages 3 and up or twins. Kazakhstan
also allows the adoption of two unrelated children.
The children are generally healthy, with the exception
of some having minor special needs.
Adoptive
Parent Requirements
The program
is open to single women or married couples. The family
must meet United States Immigration requirements as
well as provide a complete dossier of paperwork to
Kazakhstan officials. The dossier guide you will be
given later will give you detailed instructions as
to what documents are necessary to adopt in Kazakhstan.
Country
and Culture
Kazakhstan
is a former Soviet Union republic bordering Russia southern border and was the second largest country
to come out of the breakup of the former Soviet Union
in 1991. Covering over 1 million square miles, its about half the size of mainland America. Although
most people are unfamiliar with Kazakhstan and its
people, internationally it is best known for being
the home of the Russian space program including the
MIR and International space stations. Kazakhstan is
also a developing nation that is currently involved
with numerous joint ventures with western European
and American companies to develop its vast number
of raw natural resources and to grow their economy.
The Kazakhs
constitute about 46% of the population (compared to
32% in 1970). Russians, who came to live in large
numbers during the Soviet period, constitute 35%,
Ukrainians, 5%, and ethnic Germans, 3%; the remaining
11% consists of smaller numbers of other European
and Asian peoples. The culture and food reflect this
and most people are bilingual in Kazakh and Russian
or another language.
The educational
and health-care systems, developed under the USSR,
follows Soviet model, although some changes were introduced
since independence in 1991. Restrictions on religion,
for example, have been relaxed. The traditional Kazakh
was nomadic and pastoral, but today their way of life
and cultural expressions show strong Russian influences.
