ADOPT AN OLDER CHILD
Thousands of children are waiting in orphanages for their chance to have a loving family and a better future. It is very difficult to find a family for an older child. Unfortunately most of the older children will stay in orphanages until they are sixteen years of age. Then they enter the world without having the strong foundation a family provides and they are uncertain about how to make meaningful contributions as an adult. If you are looking to adopt an older child it is important to gain as much information as possible about the child because many of the children have come from a difficult background and need special attention and care. Children often enter orphanages because of the inability of the birth family to meet their needs. This may be because of financial reasons, lifestyle issues, abuse or neglect.
Some orphanages allow prospective adoptive parents to start communication with the child while they are in the process of preparing adoption paperwork. Generally this communication takes the form of letter writing and sending packages to the orphanage. Some orphanages will provide basic information about the child and will answer questions about the child. We will do our best to obtain as much information as possible about available children for you to make right decision.
Older Children in Eastern European Orphanages
The future that awaits older children after leaving the orphanage is usually very sad. Orphans have to leave their orphanages at the age of sixteen, and they are then expected to start a life of their own. Being unable to work due to lack of education and having no means to continue their education, children often end up living in the street. Those who have more luck, greater willpower or a stronger character, may eventually achieve some higher goals in their lives, but those children are rare exceptions rather than typical examples.
As a rule, older children’s chances to be adopted are very slim as compared to those of infants and toddlers, and that is completely understandable. Young children are less likely to have attachment disorders, discipline problems and bad habits. They are innocent, likable and oftentimes irresistible. They will quickly learn the new language, more easily attach to the new parents and get accustomed to the new surroundings with less difficulty.
Older children need more time to learn a foreign language, attach to new people and get used to unfamiliar places. It takes a greater effort to make new friends, learn new things and overcome homesickness. But their medical condition is usually better known because it is not always possible to detect medical problems at a young age. Older children also have a formed personality and caretakers have had the opportunity to observe their social skills and ability to accept responsibility for their actions.
Most importantly, parents who adopt older children, virtually save their lives by giving them their last chance and providing them with all the necessary tools to build their future and become capable and successful people. Just like infants, older children need love and care from that special family they can call their own, the family that will share their sad and happy moments, the family that will be there to protect and nurture their growing minds and vulnerable souls.
Consider adopting an older child, and you will make a world of a difference in one precious and deserving life!
